Course Title

Special Seminar on Research Methodologies

Instructor(s) /Position

Professor Dr. Dinil Pushpalal,

Dr. Sunjidmaa Danzandorj and others

Objectives

This seminar is focused on the development of students’ abilities in research planning, academic writing and presentation in various engineering fields.

Goal of Study

Students will be able to understand how to write a research proposal. The emphasis will be given on developing skills in order to discuss, debate and formulate their ideas in different engineering backgrounds.

Content and Course Schedule

This course contains 15 seminars, 4 hours per seminar, which discuss how to do the research planning, academic writing and presentation. Four seminars at the beginning will prepare students for research planning, writing, presentations and reviewing the related literature. Eleven seminars in further will be progressed through reading the previous literature, tutorials, and group discussion on important engineering matters. The seminars guide the participants, step-by-step, from the selection of a problem, through the process of conducting authentic research, to the preparation of a completed report, with practical suggestions throughout. The seminars emphasize the idea that quality research demands planning and design, and they provide what is needed for students to be able to execute their own research projects effectively and professionally. The final presentation by the students on a selected topic is the climax.

Seminar 1 Sep. 6 Tuesday 14:00-18:00

An introduction to research planning; What research is not?; What research is?

Scanning a previous research paper to understand essential features of a research article.

Sep. 7  A reserved day for preparation by the students

Seminar 2  Sep. 8 Thursday 14:00-18:00

Explaining research methodologies; results and discussions; conclusions

Sep. 8-9  A reserved day for preparation by the students

Seminar 3  Sep. 9 Friday 14:00-18:00

Practicing to give a presentation

Sep. 10, 11  A reserved weekend for preparation for presentation

Seminar 4  Sep. 12 Monday 14:00-18:00

Final presentation by students and advices from the instructors

Textbook and References

Teaching materials prepared by the instructor will be given to the students. Relevant previous literature of students’ own research fields will also be used as reference materials.
